Day 4

I was praying it wouldn’t happen, but it did; Allyssa had a setback day today. For whatever reason the pain was a bit overwhelming for her. They have been using a 0-10 pain scale for her to describe how she is feeling; 0 being, “I’m cool, no pain here”, and 10 being “this fucking shit hurts really bad and I need some good drugs RIGHT NOW!” Today she described it as being between 7 and 8. Not good. Since she has been in a private room, they tried 4 different pain meds before they found one that didn’t make her puke her guts up. This last drug they put her on seems to have worked really good so far, so the fact she was in that much pain gave me a moment of pause.

I have no doubt that Allyssa is a tough young woman, and I have no doubt that she is in pain, but her mother hit on something tonight; she is in NO medical danger, she is choosing not to eat, and she is essentially choosing to hide in her hospital room. I am not typically inclined to agree with Talley about anything, but I think she may have hit the nail on the head with this one.

I think we have started our journey into the “Feel Sorry for Me Zone”.

Day 3

Allyssa had a much better day today. She was able to take a shower, which as everyone knows, goes a long way towards making you feel better. I thought it a bit odd that the surgeon wasn’t concerned about her getting the incision wet, but they said go ahead, and she did. She commented on how little time she spent washing what was left of her hair. I think she is still pissed about that. I don’t blame her. As a show of solidarity, I am going to get my hair buzzed this next week. Be looking for a picture of the two of us.

She was able to eat a pear and keep it down, so that is pretty huge.

When Pauline and I were visiting, Allyssa’s sister Sara and her husband John stopped by for a visit. They brought her a bunch of gifts which Allyssa thought was just great. John’s two sisters, Kat and Lisa, also arrived bearing gifts. Allyssa was very animated and conversational with everyone. As we were getting ready to leave you could tell she was running out of gas. However, she still had two more visitors, one of her best friends, Alexsis (I probably completely mangled that spelling), and her mother.

I guess if she continues to show improvement, she could be out of the hospital in the next couple of days. All things considered, that is absolutely remarkable. And to think, we almost lost her four days ago. Thank you Lord!!

Day 2

Allyssa had somewhat of a stressful start to her day from what I am told. One of the first things they wanted to do when she moved from ICU to her own room was to get her off the morphine. I agree wholeheartedly. The quicker the better. The problem, as the nursing staff has discovered, is she still isn’t to the point where she can take anything in pill form. Yesterday when they moved her, the new nurse was doing an assessment; ‘grip my fingers, push on the palms of my hands with the balls of your feet, does your head hurt? on a scale of 0-10 how does it feel?’ ‘Definitely a 7′, was the reply. The new nurse realized she didn’t have Allyssa’s chart and scurried off to find it. When she returned, she said it had been decided to give her some Tylenol. My first thought was, “yeah, good luck getting that to stay down.” Sure as shit, not 10 seconds after she swallowed the pills with some water, YACK!!!! right back up it came.

This morning Allyssa was once again going through an assessment. And yet again, the nurses thought it would be ok to give her a pain med in pill form. My lovely daughter rewarded the nurses by promptly throwing the Vicodin right back up. They must not have been paying attention yesterday. Her. Stomach. Is. Upset. So, back to IV pain meds.

We popped in to see her this afternoon and she was out cold. Sleeping very deep. Those of you out there who are parents know what I am talking about; you can watch your kid sleep and know if it is restful or not. This appeared to me to be a very peaceful sleep. We dropped off a mini pillow-pet Spongebob and watched her sleep for a bit. Talley’s mother was there (the Evil One had gone home to take a shower), and I can’t stand her ass, so we didn’t stay very long.

And as a side note, the exact stainless steel surgical staple count is 43. It sure as fuck looked like more than that to me, but it is our baby laying there….one would have probably looked like 20.

Day 1

Allyssa has been moved from ICU to a private room. I was present this morning when they removed the drain from her head and re-bandaged her. She has an incision beginning behind the hairline in the front to the approximate crown of her head, curving to her left and downwards, back towards her left ear. I do not have an exact count, but I speculate she has 100 + stainless steel surgical staples in her head. She asked, “How do I look Dad?” Not really knowing what to say, I popped off with, “Think Borg.” “Really??!? Borg? I look like a Borg? COOL!” That’s my baby girl; Star Trek junkie just like her Dad. They also removed the catheter and one of her IV’s before the move to a private room. Needless to say, I didn’t stick around for the pee-pee tube removal.

As you might imagine, she has one hell of a headache. They finally had a chance to check her back and neck for damage from the fall, and all is well there; no fractures. Her dry sense of humor has resurfaced, and THAT is a good sign.

God willing, the truly bad shit is over with.

Today our youngest daughter, Allyssa, had a serious accident during cheerleading practice. The details of the accident are not fully known at this time. What is known is that she suffered severe head trauma.

She was transported to a local area hospital where emergency surgery was performed to remove a blood clot from her brain. The surgery went off without a hitch. The neurosurgeon said she had a single bleeding vessel in her brain which caused the clot, and the swelling of the brain was significantly less than it could have been given the size of the clot.

She is currently in ICU. They are going to give her another CT scan in the morning. The good news is she was awake and responsive to all 4 of her parents, as well as her grandparents; she knew who all of us were. She had no idea why she was in the hospital. She said the last thing she remembers is her head slamming the floor.

For those of you who do, please say a prayer for our little girl.

When she gets better, Daddy is going on a nut cutting expedition to find out what the fuck happened.

As most of you know, The Blonde is a HUGE Green Bay Packers fan. They lost at home to the New York Giants today in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs. The picture above pretty accurately depicts The Blonde’s reaction. The Packers flat-out sucked. Their defense looked like the Dallas Cowboys defense had drugged the Green Bay Packers defense, put their uniforms on and played. THEY SUCKED SHIT THROUGH A DIRTY SOCK.

The suckage wasn’t isolated to the defense. The wide receivers for the Packers might have thought they were playing ‘hot potato’ rather than football. Uncharacteristically, they dropped a shit-load of passes. All in all, the Packers got their cheese grilled.

Normally I would say something nice about the winning team, but I hate the NY Giants as much as I hate the Washington Redskins and my ex-wife. So….I will be a San Francisco 49ers fan for a weekend.
